For the 13th Annual DUMBO Art Under the Bridge Festival. I installed an official-looking sign on the waterfront of Empire State Park, overlooking the Manhattan skyline. The sign contained simple instructions: "For info, text DUMBOVIEW to 41411." Visitors who sent the text message received the following message:
You are viewing a stunning panorama of the New York
skyline framed by the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges.
A commentary on 21st century culture, "Phone-tastic View" set out to explore how key life experiences are now mediated via digital technology. In particular, the sign offered information about the view but yielded only a literal description.

In so doing, I wanted to examine the role that mobile phones have played in digitizing our daily lives, from enabling text messaging to photos to on-the-go web access. At the same time, I looked at how the ready accessibility of information via Wikipedia, Google and WolframAlpha interact and perhaps even interfere with our ability to experience moments as they are, without the supplement of data and key facts.
