Streethaiku |

The streethaiku series is a photographic series inspired by the aesthetics of haiku. I think of my street photography as a form of poetry, or kado, as the mindset I take to my photography is almost identical with that which I take to my poetry. My primary aesthetics are still aware (impermanence) and yugen (awe). I call my work "street haiku" because it's very much about "haiku moments," or moments that express the essence and aesthetic of a haiku poem. We see this in classical Chinese sanshui paintings and Japanese haiga—the marriage of verse and image come naturally in these traditions.
This was my first photographic series, and I was named Best Emerging Artist in 2007 at the GLAAD OUTAuction, and the images and concepts were explored further in an article for Tricycle Magazine. I revived streethaiku for a show at the Museum of Chinese in America, though I never really stopped.
